In Kochi, the government has directed a payment of Rs 25,000 in compensation to Sojish of Nettoor as per the state human rights commission's order. The additional chief secretary of the home department issued an order stating that this compensation would be deducted from the former SI of Panangad's salary in three equal instalments. The commission, chaired by Justice JB Kosi, had ruled in favor of Sojish, a member of a scheduled caste, who had been physically assaulted by the former SI Vipin AB. Sojish was taken into custody by a police team led by the former SI without proper authorization after being admitted to a hospital. Sojish filed a complaint with the commission, which subsequently ordered that a case be filed against the SI and compensation be paid. Although a probe was conducted and departmental action was taken against the SI, no compensation was initially provided. The government noted that the SI had the opportunity to present a defense before the final order was issued by the commission, but failed to do so. Consequently, the government instructed the payment of Rs 25,000 to Sojish as ordered.
